Legislators and state officials will collect gifts for children in the juvenile justice system during a "Christmas in the Capitol" at 2:30 p.m. on December 13 in Old Supreme Court Room of the State Capitol.
Senator Missy Irvin of Mountain View, a member of the Senate Committee on Children and Youth, is one of the organizers of the gift drive.
"The Division of Youth Services is currently housing approximately 250 youth in secure residential facilities between the ages of 12-21," Irvin said.
"We want to provide a stocking and a wrapped gift for each youth, as well as a 'house gift' for each facility. For many young people, this will be their first Christmas in confinement, away from their families."
"It's the incarcerated kids who are our most vulnerable because they are often overlooked. They need to know the love of Christmas more than anyone. And they are our children - in our custody and in our care," Irvin said.
