Wage and Hour and Child Labor
The Wage
and Hour Section is responsible for enforcement of minimum
wage, overtime, and child labor laws.
Our division
provides a service to employer's as well as employees regarding
their rights concerning minimum wage, overtime and child labor
regulations.
The services
offered to the public include issuing work permits for minors,
and providing information regarding minimum wage and overtime
laws.

How
many hours can a minor 14 or 15 years of age work when school
is in session?
According to the Arkansas Child Labor Law, when school is
in session a minor 14 or 15 years of age cannot begin work
before 6 a.m., work later than 7 p.m., nor more than 8 hours
a day, 6 days a week, or more than 48 hours a week.
How
many hours can a minor 14 or 15 years of age work when school
is NOT in session?
According to the Arkansas Child Labor Law, a minor 14 or 15
years of age cannot begin work before 6 a.m., work past 9
p.m., nor more than 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, or more
than 48 hours a week when school is not in session.
What
are the hour restrictions for a 16 or 17 year old according
to the Arkansas Child Labor Law?
When school is in session the next day, a 16 or 17 year old cannot begin work before 6 a.m., work past 11 p.m., work more than 10 consecutive hours a day, more than 10 hours in a 24 hour period, more than 6 days a week, or more than 54 hours a week. When school is NOT in session the next day, everything is the same except a 16 or 17 year old may be employed until 12:00 midnight, and in certain occupations or circumstances, they may even be allowed to work the hours between 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m.. Specific information can be found in the child labor regulation 2.501.
