The Arkansas State Hospital (ASH) is licensed by the Arkansas Department of Health and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, formerly known as HCFA, and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).  The hospital includes 90 beds for acute psychiatric admission; a 60-bed forensic treatment services program which offers assistance to circuit courts throughout the state; a 16-bed adolescent treatment program for youth 13-18; and a program for juvenile sex offenders.  Prior to the development of the sex offenders program, all such individuals were sent to treatment facilities out-of-state.  This program became operational in January 1995.

With the exception of the forensic court-ordered referrals, all admissions are pre-screened by the 15 community mental health centers to assure appropriateness of admission, continuity of care, and treatment within the least restrictive setting possible.  Each community mental health center (CMHC) offers a full array of services and brief intervention therapies, to long-term community support services.  The CMHC's offer 24-hour emergency care and persons needing a more restrictive setting may be treated in a local hospital or crisis unit.  It is the intent of the Division of Behavioral Health Services that accountability, responsibility, and authority for client services will be at the local level.
