Eldertopia “Working together to create well being for people of all ages”

Dr. William H. Thomas is an international authority on geriatric medicine and eldercare.  He is dedicated to promoting and developing constructive, holistic approaches to aging and the care of our elders.  He is the founder of The Eden Alternative, and also the Green House. Dr. Thomas graduated from Harvard Medical School.  He presently holds the position of Professor of Aging Studies and Distinguished Fellow at UMBC’s Erickson School in Baltimore, Maryland.

He is the recipient of a three-year fellowship from the global nonprofit organization Ashoka.  He won the America's Award, established by Norman Vincent Peale and sometimes called "The Nobel Prize for Goodness" in 1997.  Dr. Thomas has also been honored by the Giraffe Project, which gives awards to people who “stick their neck out” to advance the common good.  Most recently, he has been honored with the Heinz Award for the Human Condition.

His books include What Are Old People For?; How Elders Will Save the World; Learning from Hannah; and Life Worth Living, which explores the concept of the Eden Alternative and its impact on long-term care.

Dr. William H. Thomase - Keynote Speaker
General Session: A New Old Age
1:30 - 2:30 PM

William H. Thomas, MD
Professor of Aging Studies Erickson School UMBC,
Founder of Green House Project and The Eden Alternative

This seminar addresses the development of a new perspective on age and aging as both necessary and possible.  Given the importance of aging in our lives, and the impact of aging on our families and society, a new openness and even a curiosity about human aging would seem more than warranted.  The time has come for our wondrous longevity to emerge from the long shadow cast by the vigor and virtues of youth.  The presenter will discuss freeing ourselves from traditional expectations, understanding the declinism philosophy on old age, and constructing a new old age.
