SeniorNet Celebrates 20 Years of Success

SeniorNet is a nonprofit organization of computer-using adults, age 50 and older. Its mission is to provide older adults education for and access to computer technologies to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom.

The organization has benefited millions of seniors since its founding in 1986 and supports over 240 Learning Centers including several in Arkansas.  One is SeniorNet’s Little Rock Learning Center established in 1994 by a group of nine volunteers.  Over 3000 students have benefited from their efforts

Classes meet on the UAMS campus in room 1155 of the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at Seventh and Elm Streets right off I-630.  Parking is free and conveniently located immediately in front of the building.

Nine courses of instruction are offered, beginning with Introduction to Computers.  Each course consists of sixteen hours of hands on training in a classroom with eleven computers.  Classes meet at 9:30 AM, 12:00 PM or 2:30 PM, Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday of each week for four weeks, beginning the first week of each month.  Examples of courses include:

Introduction to Computers

This is a basic course in computer usage for new computer owners and individuals who have had very little experience using computers.

Word Processing

This course provides an introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word.

Database

This course teaches individuals how to set up and use a database. It may include friends' or organization members' addresses, birthdays, anniversaries or general data relative to medical records, stocks and bonds, etc.

Spreadsheet

Do you try to keep track of your daily expenses or find out the value of an investment? A spreadsheet is an electronic version of a paper worksheet that will perform these calculations automatically. Budgets, balance sheets and income statements are just a few of the tasks that can be accomplished using spreadsheets.

Using the Internet

The goals of this course are to introduce the students to the popular uses of the Internet (accessing the World Wide Web) and to provide them with basic skills so they will be able to correspond with friends and family using email, navigate around the Web, search for information of interest to them.

Exploring Windows XP

A general knowledge of the Windows operating system is essential if you want to feel at ease using the computer.

Quicken

A comprehensive financial management program for the typical household or small business.

Graphics

The Graphics course starts with inserting, rotating and sizing WordArt and ClipArt in Microsoft Works documents. The Print Artist graphics program is used to create signs, calendars and greeting cards, and Adobe Photo Elements 4.0 is used to import, repair and touch up photographs. Scanners and digital cameras are also introduced.

Genealogy

Students in the Genealogy class work in depth with the Family Tree Maker program and learn to transfer information to and from other programs. They are introduced to the research tools available on the Internet, as well as other research sites.
